A personal view from Edgar Stijner – motorcycle enthusiast, entrepreneur and proud participant
As the owner of Motor Service Edgar Stijner in Enschede, my life has revolved around motorcycles for years. Tinkering, riding, and above all: sharing the passion with other enthusiasts. This year I am proud to participate in The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride in Enschede on Sunday 18 May 2025 - and for me that is more than just a nice Sunday ride.
What is The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride?
The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride (DGR) is a global motorcycle event that brings together riders in style – think sharp suits, suspenders and classic accessories – for a ride on classic and vintage-style motorcycles. But it's not just about appearances. The ride has a purpose: to raise money and awareness for men's health, specifically prostate cancer research and mental health.
Why I participate
For me, DGR is the perfect example of how the love of motorcycles can connect people and mean something to a greater whole. As an entrepreneur in the motorcycle world, I see every day how much positive energy motorcycle riding gives people. It is freedom, relaxation, and sometimes even a form of therapy on two wheels.
In addition, I strongly believe that we as men need to take better care of ourselves. Both physically and mentally. It is too easy to ignore signals, to just 'carry on'. But health is not something that can be taken for granted. And talking about how you are really doing - we should do that more often. Especially in a time when it seems cool to carry everything yourself, I want to show that taking care of yourself actually radiates strength.
By riding along with The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride I want to use my voice and visibility to bring this topic to the attention in a positive way. Because the sooner we are aware of our health, the greater the chance for real change.
A modern motorcycle among classics
Although you often see classic bikes at DGR, it’s all about style and intent. I myself ride a BMW S1000XR – a modern sport-touring machine with a powerful presence. Perhaps not the most obvious model for this event, but with a good suit, an attitude to match and a bit of flair, I’ll fit right in.
Plus, it proves that you don’t necessarily need an old café racer to enter – if your heart is in the right place, you’re welcome.
At the moment the Netherlands is in the top 3 of countries with the highest donations!

Why Style Matters
The style of DGR is not a gimmick. It contributes to the unique character of the event. By getting on the bike neatly dressed, we attract attention in a positive way and break through the stereotypical image of the motorcyclist. It creates conversations, connection and awareness - and that is exactly what we want to achieve.
